Susan asked:&lt;P&gt; "My friend and I are starting a silver jewelry home party business. I was wondering if you recommend doing an inventory of the jewelry before you leave a hostess' house. If so, is there any quick method. We have been at a couple home jewelry parties and the inventory is huge. Do you have any suggestions? Is it even necessary? Thank you."  &lt;P align="Left"&gt; I sent this answering email to Susan:&lt;P&gt;  &lt;P align="Left"&gt; "Regarding inventory at home parties, I think the easiest way would be to arrange your displays so that all rings are together, all bracelets together, all pendants together, etc. so that you can make a quick count of what's left in each category as you pack up.  &lt;P align="Left"&gt; "However, I've never had a problem with theft at a home party - but I do agree it's possible. Since guests tend to be friends of the hostess, they're less likely to commit a crime in her home. But it's not an impossibility, and taking inventory would certainly let you know if everything's accounted for at the end of the party.  &lt;P align="Left"&gt; "But if it turns out that something *is* missing, what do you do? Making an issue of it to the hostess or in front of all the guests would put a damper on the party, and would probably guarantee that you'd have no more parties scheduled from that group. And if the missing piece wasn't stolen but turns up later dropped between the sofa cushions, it would be awful to suggest that someone at the party had committed a theft and then be mistaken."  &lt;P align="Left"&gt; &lt;b&gt;What's your opinion?&lt;/b&gt;  Should jewelry artists take inventory at the end of our home parties? That's the best way to find out what works and feels right for *you*, because there's no single correct way to run your jewelry business.  &lt;P align="Left"&gt; Sometimes these experiments flop - but there's no such thing as "failure" when they do.  You're simply learning that something doesn't work for you.  In fact, to stay successful you never really stop experimenting with new things, flopping occasionally, and evolving your business.  I think of it as a growth cycle:&lt;P&gt;  &lt;P align="Left"&gt; &lt;center&gt;experiment -&gt; flop -&gt; aha! -&gt; new success -&gt; (repeat) &lt;P&gt;&lt;/center&gt;  &lt;P align="Left"&gt; Here are some episodes from my own jewelry business journey; in each one, you can see how I tried something new, flopped at least once, and turned that learning experience into something positive that improved my business.  And guess what?  That's what I'm still doing!  :o)  &lt;P align="Left"&gt; As I tell about my experiences, I'm putting in links to pages on Home Jewelry Business Success Tips that provide more information on each topic.  &lt;P align="Left"&gt;  &lt;P align="Left"&gt; &lt;b&gt;My First Art Show&lt;/b&gt;&lt;P&gt; When I first got into jewelry making, I obsessed on making gemstone bead earrings.  Before long I'd made over 100 pairs of earrings but had never sold any of them to anyone, until a friend talked me into being in a tiny Christmas craft sale at her church.  &lt;P align="Left"&gt; I was so nervous before this little show that I almost made myself sick, so I never even thought about using any kind of &lt;a href="http://www.home-jewelry-business-success-tips.com/jewelry-displays.html" target="_blank"&gt;jewelry displays&lt;/a&gt; or even a table cloth!  I just laid out tons of my earrings mounted on earring cards on a bare table and sat on a chair behind it.  Despite my initial nervousness and lack of jewelry displays, I made enough sales to have a sense of success.  &lt;P align="Left"&gt; However, looking around at the other tables at this first show, I realized that a professional-looking display could far outsell a random scattering of earrings on a bare table. So for my next few shows I experimented with different elaborate displays - and found out that fussy displays are a pain to set up and take down, and require a lot of closet space to store at home!  &lt;P align="Left"&gt; So gradually I evolved my jewelry displays to my current simple, streamlined setup, which looks professional, is lightweight and compact to store and transport, and stays loaded with my inventory and ready to go at all times. It takes me only half an hour or so to set up and take down my booth when I do shows, and now when a customer calls wanting to come to my house to look at jewelry, I can just whip out a nice display on the guest bed in only a few minutes.  &lt;P align="Left"&gt; &lt;b&gt;Consigning to Shops&lt;/b&gt;&lt;P&gt; After my first show, I jumped into consigning and wholesaling my work to gift shops and galleries.  A few months into consigning, I realized that letting each shop have dozens of pieces of my jewelry on consignment meant buying more supplies to restock my inventory, before receiving payment for my jewelry that was tied up in the shops.    &lt;P align="Left"&gt; Another flop-turned-lesson was jumping into every consignment shop that was willing to display my jewelry.  I found that while some consignment shops are wonderful to work with, not all shops are reliable, and I struggled for six months to get payment and my unsold jewelry back from an inactive shop in another state.  &lt;P align="Left"&gt; Also, one of my local shops closed without warning, and although I managed to recover my unsold jewelry, it was in terrible condition when I got it back.  The owner had carelessly shoved the unsold earrings, necklaces, and bracelets into a bag in a tangled mess, with earwires bent, necklaces snarled, and my handmade jewelry tags damaged and crumpled.  These experiences taught me to be very selective about the shops where I consigned my jewelry - and to maintain great relationships with good shops!  &lt;P align="Left"&gt; &lt;b&gt;Making Jewelry for My Market&lt;/b&gt;&lt;P&gt; Because I started out thinking of myself as an "earring artist" and not a "jewelry artist", I turned down lots of requests for bracelets and other pieces of jewelry.  (Yes, I know, I'm embarrassed to admit I did that!  But I'm sharing this with you to show what I mean about taking what we learn from mistakes to improve our jewelry businesses.)  &lt;P align="Left"&gt;  &lt;P align="Left"&gt; So one of my earliest lessons was that if you want to earn money, you have to &lt;a href="http://www.home-jewelry-business-success-tips.com/making-jewelry.html" target="_blank"&gt;make jewelry that people want to buy&lt;/a&gt;, not just what you feel like making. When I realized that I could sell more by offering other pieces of jewelry to match my earrings, I finally diversified and began designing bracelets, necklaces, anklets, and pendants too. And although custom orders are not my favorite work to do, they can be very profitable, so I began accepting them too.&lt;P&gt;  &lt;P align="Left"&gt; &lt;b&gt;What I Discovered About Packaging&lt;/b&gt;&lt;P&gt; I thought offering gift wrap would be a nice idea.  So I started out charging a small fee for &lt;a href="http://www.home-jewelry-business-success-tips.com/jewelry-gift-wrap.html" target="_blank"&gt;jewelry gift wrap&lt;/a&gt;, thinking this would be a good add-on profit maker. But I didn't get very many takers for it.  So I experimented with offering my customers free gift wrap, and found that by adding that complimentary service, I increased my sales and repeat business significantly.  Now I provide a complimentary selection of different types of elegant pouches, boxes, and bags, which my busy customers greatly appreciate!  Anything you can do to simplify your customer's life will make them remember you the next time they need to purchase a gift.  &lt;P align="Left"&gt; &lt;b&gt;Struggling with Jewelry Photography&lt;/b&gt;&lt;P&gt; The farther I traveled into my jewelry business, the more important it became to have good photos of my work.  So I learned through a great deal of trial and error how to get professional-looking photographs of my jewelry.  &lt;P align="Left"&gt; I got a cheapie digital camera and spent hours and days trying to get good, clear, closeup shots of my jewelry.  After a lot of frustration, I finally figured out that this camera just wasn't capable of photographing jewelry, so I mastered jewelry photography with my computer's flatbed scanner. You can get some beautifully artistic &lt;a href="http://www.home-jewelry-business-success-tips.com/scanners.html" target="_blank"&gt;jewelry photos with a scanner&lt;/a&gt;, and it's a quick and simple way to get great shots for your website, auction listings, or other literature.  Recently I've also finally gotten a much better &lt;a href="http://www.home-jewelry-business-success-tips.com/digital-cameras-for-photographing-jewelry.html" target="_blank"&gt;digital camera&lt;/a&gt; that's well suited for photographing jewelry.  &lt;P align="Left"&gt; &lt;b&gt;Teaching Jewelry Making&lt;/b&gt;&lt;P&gt; One of the unexpected opportunities my jewelry business has brought me is &lt;a href="http://www.home-jewelry-business-success-tips.com/teaching-jewelry-making-workshops.html" target="_blank"&gt;teaching jewelry making workshops&lt;/a&gt;, which is very rewarding. I had never previously taught anything in my life.  &lt;P align="Left"&gt; But I learned through experimenting that workshops are a lot easier for me if everyone works on the same type of jewelry at the same time, instead of having a roomful of students each doing a totally different project and each needing a lot of help with every step!  &lt;P align="Left"&gt; And from learning that bit of wisdom, I came up with the idea for a jewelry workshop for little girls - &lt;a href="http://www.home-jewelry-business-success-tips.com/beading-party.html" target="_blank"&gt;bracelet-making birthday parties for girls&lt;/a&gt;.  These parties are a wonderful market niche, and a fun way to spend a few hours while earning some good money for your time.  &lt;P align="Left"&gt; &lt;b&gt;Your Own Jewelry Business Success&lt;/b&gt;&lt;P&gt; Creating your jewelry business and your own independent lifestyle is a thrilling journey.  And the best part is that it's up to *you* to create it the way you want to live it.  Keep experimenting with new things, and don't be afraid to have a few flops. It was just unfortunate that the subject was a little reluctant.&lt;BR&gt;&lt;BR&gt;  The echidna is one of those very unusual, unique mammals that lay eggs.  Such a creature, of which there are only two (the platypus is the other), are known as monotremes.  Their diet consists entirely of ants and termites, which they dig out of rock-hard nests with their very powerful claws. They then lick up the disturbed insects with their long, sticky tongues.  As you can see, when an echidna feels threatened, it will roll itself into a ball, or alternatively will try to burrow into the ground.  They can live for over forty years and produce eggs of a leathery quality, which are transferred immediately after production to the female's pouch.  The egg hatches after 10 days or so, and the young echidna then continues to develop in the pouch.  Then some of them choose to live on the opal fields with we humans! Sometimes a truck might be used for transporting mining gear around.  Most of the roads these trucks travel on are solely dirt roads in the bush, and distances covered are short, so that anything capable of moving a load is often used.  New trucks that can't be fixed by the ordinary person who has a bit of mechanical knowledge are of very little use. Besides, they cost too much if all you are moving is dirt and no opal. Therefore, old trucks that are still mobile are a useful item, and old trucks that are past moving are used for spares.  A miner might have one truck that actually moves and three or four similar ones that aren't going anywhere, but comprise his 'spares' supply.  &lt;BR&gt;&lt;BR&gt;  As well as trucks, there are many old cars on the fields that are going to be renovated 'one day'.  That day is almost always interrelated with the day that the owner becomes a successful opal miner rather than just an opal miner. Can you name the jewelry supplier that goes with each tagline below?  &lt;P align="Left"&gt; 1) Friendly service&lt;P&gt; 2) Your one stop shop for wholesale bead and metal craft supplies&lt;P&gt; 3) Supply your imagination&lt;P&gt; 4) The world's largest selection of beads&lt;P&gt; 5) If you can bend a paper clip . . . .&lt;P&gt; 6) Doing our part to resurrect a lost art&lt;P&gt;  &lt;P align="Left"&gt; (Answers are at the end of this article.)  &lt;P align="Left"&gt; A good tagline helps potential customers understand what your business is about, expresses your personality, and makes you memorable and unique.  Creating your tagline is just as important - and fun! - as coming up with your business name.  &lt;P align="Left"&gt; &lt;center&gt;&lt;b&gt;Developing Your Own Tagline&lt;/b&gt;&lt;/center&gt;  &lt;P align="Left"&gt; The ideal tagline is clear, concise, less than 10 words, and has a nice ring whether spoken aloud or read silently.  Here are some tips for brainstorming a successful tagline for your jewelry business:  &lt;P align="Left"&gt; - Consider why your business is valuable to your customers.  Why should they choose to do business with you instead of your competitors?  &lt;P align="Left"&gt; - With that in mind, write down all the words that express your jewelry business; make it a long list and write till you can't think of another word.  Include words that describe your products as well as words that express benefits to your customers.  &lt;P align="Left"&gt; - Search other jewelry business websites and consider the taglines of the ones who have them.  Look at a variety of jewelers - from big jewelry corporations to cottage artisans.  The purpose is NOT to copy their taglines; just think about whether you like them and why.  Some have a nice ring to them, some sound pompous, some are vague, some are long-winded, some are clever, some sound awkward.  &lt;P align="Left"&gt; - Now go back to your word list and highlight the most important words.  Experiment with them to come up with different taglines.  Limit yourself to less than 10 words for a tagline.  The shorter the better!  You might want to play with this step over a few days, writing drafts before you come up with the final version.  As with most writing, what sounds great now might not be as appealing tomorrow!  &lt;P align="Left"&gt; - The key to writing a powerful tagline is to make every single word the best, most expressive word you can put in that spot.  &lt;P align="Left"&gt; Have you come up with a final tagline you love?  I hope so!  No matter whether you have or not, you can always tweak it here and there as time goes by to evolve it into your ideal version.  &lt;P align="Left"&gt; &lt;center&gt;&lt;b&gt;My Jewelry Business Tagline, Before and After&lt;/b&gt;&lt;/center&gt;  &lt;P align="Left"&gt; When I first started selling my jewelry, I came up with a long-winded, pompous statement for my tagline.  I believed each word was *so* important that I couldn't imagine leaving any of them out.  &lt;P align="Left"&gt; So this boring, windy sentence is what I printed on all my jewelry hang tags, earring cards, business cards, website, etc.  It's embarrassing now, but I'm going to let you read it just so you can see the value of editing your concept down to the most clear and concise statement possible.  Okay, let me put a bag over my head now while you can read it:  &lt;P align="Left"&gt; "Semiprecious stones handcrafted into naturally enchanting jewelry."  &lt;P align="Left"&gt; Ahem.  Lots of room for improvement, right?  I can see that now, too!  Over time I liked it less and less, and finally after a ruthless editing session I reduced it to the current version:  &lt;P align="Left"&gt; "Enchanting gemstone artistry."  &lt;P align="Left"&gt; Probably not perfect yet, but a huge step forward from my first attempt!  It says basically the same thing - but more powerfully and in less than half as many words.  Can you see how shorter and sweeter makes it better and more professional?  &lt;P align="Left"&gt; &lt;center&gt;&lt;b&gt;Using Your Tagline&lt;/b&gt;&lt;/center&gt;  &lt;P align="Left"&gt; Your jewelry business tagline is a marketing tool, so you'll need to use it to your advantage.  Include it on all your packaging and communications.  Any place you put your logo or the name of your business, you should follow it with your tagline. This article has some great tips for profiting from eBay, including a way to make the most of the "free auction listing" days.     &lt;P align="Left"&gt; &lt;h4&gt;&lt;center&gt;Now for our Featured Article:&lt;br&gt; The Quality of Your Jewelry Supplies and Tools&lt;/h4&gt;  &lt;P align="Left"&gt; by Rena Klingenberg&lt;/center&gt;  &lt;P align="Left"&gt; When I first started making jewelry, I always purchased the cheapest beads, jewelry supplies, and tools, believing I was saving money by shopping so frugally.  &lt;P align="Left"&gt; For example, I started out buying D grade freshwater pearls, thinking I was saving a lot of money compared to purchasing A grade pearls.  But one day when I received a shipment of D grade pearls, I saw that the strands in this batch were of an even poorer quality than usual.  Each strand had only two or three barely-usable beads, with the rest all pitted, scratched, missing their nacre, and badly drilled.  They weren't even fit for junk jewelry.  &lt;P align="Left"&gt; I returned all pearl strands in that batch to the supplier, and ordered A grade pearls in their place.  When I received the new batch of A grade strands, I couldn't believe they were even considered to be the same type of stone as the D grade!  They were gorgeous, evenly shaped, creamy in color, with beautiful nacre and precise drilling.  And almost every pearl on every strand was usable.  &lt;P align="Left"&gt; After a quick calculation I discovered that a strand of higher priced A grade pearls, which is nearly 100% usable, results in a lower price per pearl than a D grade strand with half or less of the pearls usable.  And the A grade pearls made a HUGE difference in the appearance of my finished jewelry, enabling me to price it higher.  &lt;P align="Left"&gt; I did some math and realized that I had been spending more per pearl for a lower quality, which dragged my asking prices down.  Hmmm, not much of a bargain.  &lt;P align="Left"&gt; Unfortunately, this was a lesson I had to learn twice.  &lt;P align="Left"&gt; Shortly after that, I was making a line of bead bracelets with a lobster clasp, for a distributor.  Because the profit margin was so thin, I switched to cheaper lobster clasps to make the job more profitable for me.  &lt;P align="Left"&gt; Big mistake!  The new cheap clasps kept jamming and breaking, and dozens of bracelets were returned to me for repairs.  As you can imagine, replacing the cheap clasps with higher quality ones cost me a lot more in the long run.  &lt;P align="Left"&gt; So I finally learned the moral of the story:  Low-quality supplies make low-quality jewelry.  And it's not worth risking your professional reputation as a jewelry artist, just to save a few dollars on supplies.  &lt;P align="Left"&gt; I decided then and there that I do not want to be known as the artist whose jewelry falls apart!  :o)  &lt;P align="Left"&gt; I urge you to learn from my mistakes and use the highest quality jewelry components you can afford.  &lt;P align="Left"&gt; I know that when you're first starting out, sometimes you can't make jewelry at all if you don't use the less expensive, lower-quality supplies and tools.  &lt;P align="Left"&gt; But as soon as you are able to, switch to higher quality components.  The less expensive things are a false economy.  Cheaper findings fall apart easily, cheaper beads and stones make jewelry that isn't as attractive, silverplate and goldplate wear off quickly, cheap crimp beads break and make jewelry fall apart, dyed beads and stones bleed . . . and none of this enhances customers' impression of your work.  &lt;P align="Left"&gt; Cheaper tools break and become useless faster, causing the extra expense of replacing them repeatedly.  And they're hard on your hands and wrists, causing repetitive stress injuries that at best are expensive to treat, and at worst can put an end to your jewelry making career.  &lt;P align="Left"&gt; In short, the quality of your supplies is directly related to the quality of your jewelry.  And to the income of your business - higher quality pieces command higher prices.  &lt;P align="Left"&gt; Okay, I'll come clean and confess that there was a fairly recent occasion when I re-learned that cheap supplies are not the best deal.  I fell for a "bulk cabochon" deal that sounded too good to pass up.  &lt;P align="Left"&gt; When I received the cabs, at least half were too microscopic for me to wire-wrap; a quarter were terrible quality or just plain ugly; and a quarter were attractive, decent quality, and usable.  So I paid a bargain price for a batch of cabochons where only 25% were usable.  &lt;P align="Left"&gt; Let's see, that makes the price of each usable cabochon . . . a little higher than if I'd just ordered a few high quality cabs to begin with.  &lt;P align="Left"&gt; And that's the last time I'm going to put myself through that lesson.  :o) &lt;P&gt;  &lt;P align="Left"&gt;  &lt;P align="Left"&gt; &lt;h4&gt;&lt;center&gt;Neat jewelry related site&lt;/h4&gt;&lt;/center&gt; &lt;P&gt;  &lt;P align="Left"&gt; Our interesting jewelry site to visit this time is &lt;a href="http://www.enchantedlearning.com/jewel/" target="_blank"&gt;All About Jewels - Illustrated Dictionary of Jewelry&lt;/a&gt;.
